9The Island Inspired Greek Mythology

Corfu is deeply connected to Greek mythology. It is believed to be the island of the Phaeacians, where the hero Odysseus was shipwrecked before returning home in Homer’s epic, The Odyssey. 

According to legend, the island was named after the nymph Korkyra, who was loved by Poseidon, the god of the sea.
