1Monemvasia, Greece

Hidden along the southeastern coast of the Peloponnese, Monemvasia is one of Greece’s most enchanting secret towns. Carved into the side of a massive rock rising from the sea, this medieval settlement feels like stepping into another era.

The town is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, and once you pass through the stone gates, cars disappear and centuries-old life takes over. Cobbled paths wind past Byzantine churches, hidden courtyards, and restored stone mansions turned into boutique guesthouses.

Unlike Santorini or Mykonos, Monemvasia remains relatively peaceful, even in summer. Climb to the upper town for sweeping views of the Aegean, or wander the lower town at dusk when lanterns glow softly against the ancient walls. It’s romantic, atmospheric, and deeply rooted in history — a true hidden gem of Greece.
