While the Acropolis is most famous for its classical-era structures, archaeological evidence suggests that the site was inhabited as early as the Neolithic period (around 4000 BCE). 

The Mycenaeans, an ancient Greek civilization, built a fortress on the Acropolis around 1400 BCE, using it as a defensive stronghold long before the Parthenon was constructed.
