Although the Parthenon was originally built as a temple to Athena, it served different functions throughout history.
During the 5th century CE, it was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Later, during the Ottoman occupation in the 15th century, it was transformed into a mosque. These adaptations reflect the changing religious and political landscape of Athens over the centuries.
