7The Acropolis Was Heavily Damaged in 1687

One of the greatest tragedies in the history of the Acropolis occurred in 1687 during the Venetian siege of Athens. At the time, the Ottomans were using the Parthenon as a gunpowder storage facility.

A cannonball fired by the Venetians struck the building, causing a massive explosion that severely damaged the structure. Many of the sculptures and architectural elements were destroyed, and the scars of this event remain visible today.
