8Underestimating the Island’s Terrain

Santorini looks compact on a map, but don’t be fooled—it’s a rugged island with winding roads, steep hills, and scattered settlements.

Many visitors assume they can walk between towns or explore the island without much effort. In reality, the geography can be demanding. Wear proper footwear, especially if you plan to do the Fira-to-Oia hike, and consider renting a car or ATV to access more remote beaches and villages. Don’t rely solely on taxis—they’re scarce and pricey.
