1Santorini Is Not Its Official Name

The island is commonly known as Santorini, but its official name is Thira. The name “Santorini” was given by the Venetians in the 13th century and is derived from Saint Irene (Santa Irini).

Today, the island is still officially called Thira in Greek, and it is part of the Thira regional unit, which includes smaller islands such as Thirasia and Nea Kameni.
