7Mount Athos — The Holy Mountain

Mount Athos in northern Greece is a spiritual hub for Orthodox Christianity and has been a monastic center for over a thousand years. It is an autonomous monastic state, home to 20 monasteries and numerous smaller sketes.

While access is strictly regulated and women are not permitted, male pilgrims can obtain special permits to visit. Mount Athos is a living monastery: you’ll find monks engaged in prayer, traditional icon painting, and manuscript preservation. The combination of rugged coastline, dense forests, and ancient spiritual traditions creates a profound sense of timelessness.
