8The Parthenon Wasn’t Solely a Temple

While the Parthenon is renowned as a temple dedicated to Athena, it also served other purposes throughout its history. In its early years, it was a treasury for the Delian League, storing the wealth of the alliance led by Athens.

Later, during its long history, it was converted into a Christian church, a mosque, and even a gunpowder storage facility under Ottoman rule, which tragically led to its partial destruction in 1687 during a Venetian attack.
