7Crete – Diverse Marine Ecosystems

As Greece’s largest island, Crete offers a variety of marine habitats, from deep sea trenches to vibrant coral reefs. The northern coast, particularly around Chania and Rethymno, features excellent diving spots with rocky formations and marine caves where groupers, barracudas, and stingrays can be found. The south coast, with areas like Plakias and Chrissi Island, boasts unspoiled waters rich in biodiversity.

One of Crete’s most exciting dive sites is the Elephant’s Cave near Chania, a partially submerged cavern adorned with red and white stalactites. Additionally, Crete’s coastal waters attract dolphins, while lucky visitors may even spot sperm whales and beaked whales further offshore.
