Unlike modern Greece, ancient Greece was made up of city-states, or poleis, each with its own government and military.

Some of the most famous city-states included Athens, known for its democracy and cultural achievements, and Sparta, renowned for its military prowess. These city-states often fought each other, as seen in the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta.
