3Naxos Has a Rich Mythological and Historical Background

Naxos is steeped in mythology and history. Aside from its association with Zeus, it is also believed to be where Theseus abandoned Ariadne after she helped him defeat the Minotaur in Crete.  

The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was an important cultural and political center in ancient Greece. The remnants of its past can be seen in its many archaeological sites, including the Temple of Demeter and the ancient Kouros statues.
