6Escalating Seismic Activity

In the days leading up to the collapse, Santorini was subjected to an unprecedented series of earthquakes. Over 200 tremors were recorded between January 31 and February 2, with magnitudes reaching up to 4.6. These quakes were primarily concentrated in the waters between Santorini and the neighboring island of Amorgos. The Athens Geodynamic Institute reported that seven successive tremors measuring over 4.0 magnitude were recorded in the early morning of February 6.

The intensification of seismic activity prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency on the island. This declaration facilitated the rapid mobilization of resources, including the deployment of rescue teams, drones, and search dogs, to monitor and respond to potential hazards. The government also ordered the closure of schools and advised residents to avoid vulnerable coastal areas.
