Seismologists have been closely monitoring the situation, noting that while the current seismic activity is not directly linked to the island’s volcanic behavior, the possibility of a more significant earthquake cannot be dismissed. The region’s geological history includes the catastrophic eruption around 1600 BC, which significantly shaped Santorini’s current landscape. However, experts emphasize that the recent tremors are associated with tectonic movements rather than volcanic activity.

Efthymios Lekkas, president of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), stated that while there is a real risk, the seismic activity is not linked to volcanic activity. He noted that the chances of an earthquake exceeding 5.0 on the Richter scale are likely, though the likelihood of one surpassing 5.5 is lower, and a quake above 6.0 is considered almost impossible.
