9Rhodes (Ρόδος)

The name Rhodes is thought to derive from the Greek word “rhodon,” meaning rose. According to mythology, the island was associated with the sun god Helios, who fell in love with the nymph Rhodos, after whom the island was named.

The story goes that Rhodos and Helios had seven sons, who became rulers of the island. Rhodes’ connection to the sun is reflected in the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
