5Naxos (Νάξος)

Naxos takes its name from Naxos, the son of Endymion in Greek mythology. Some historians believe its name is of pre-Greek origin, possibly linked to the island’s ancient Cycladic civilization.

According to myth, Naxos was where Theseus abandoned Ariadne after she helped him defeat the Minotaur. She was later discovered by Dionysus, the god of wine, who made Naxos a land of fertility and celebration.
