9The Antikythera Mechanism

Often referred to as the world’s first computer, the Antikythera Mechanism was recovered from a shipwreck near the island of Antikythera in 1901.

This complex device, dating to the 2nd century BCE, was used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses. Its intricate design demonstrates the advanced understanding of mechanics and astronomy in Hellenistic Greece.
