The Greek flag consists of blue and white stripes with a white cross on a blue square in the upper left corner.

The nine stripes are said to represent the syllables in the phrase “Eleftheria i Thanatos” (Freedom or Death), a motto used during Greece’s War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire. The blue and white colors symbolize the sea, sky, and the Greek Orthodox faith.
