9Apokries – The Greek Carnival (February/March)

Before Lent begins, Greece bursts into color and revelry with Apokries, a centuries-old carnival season. While Patras hosts the most famous celebration, nearly every Greek town takes part with masquerade balls, costume parades, and satirical plays.

The festival is deeply rooted in ancient Dionysian rituals, blending pagan exuberance with Orthodox traditions. If you visit in February or March, you’ll encounter streets full of laughter, music, and bonfires—worlds away from the tranquil, sleepy villages of summer.
