8Temple of Poseidon – Cape Sounion

At the southernmost tip of Attica, the Temple of Poseidon stands like a sentinel above the Aegean Sea. Built in the mid-5th century BC, this temple was dedicated to the god of the sea — a fitting choice for a maritime power like Athens.

Its location is breathtaking. Perched on a cliff 60 meters above the waves, the temple offers one of the most spectacular sunsets in Greece. Ancient sailors would have seen its gleaming marble columns from afar and offered prayers for safe passage. Today, visitors come for the same reason — to feel awe, serenity, and connection to the divine.
