4Temple of Hera – Olympia

Long before Athens rose to glory, Olympia was the center of Greek spirituality and athletic competition. The Temple of Hera, built around 600 BC, is one of the oldest monumental temples in Greece.

Dedicated to Hera, the queen of the gods, it served as a model for later temples. The Heraion also housed the altar where the Olympic flame was kindled — a tradition that continues today. Its sturdy Doric columns and pastoral setting among ancient olive trees make it one of the most evocative sites in the Peloponnese.
