2Temple of Apollo Epicurius – Bassae

Hidden deep in the mountains of Arcadia, the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae is one of the most remarkable — and least known — ancient monuments in Greece. Designed by Ictinus, one of the Parthenon’s architects, it was built around 450 BC.

Its remote location and unusual combination of Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian styles make it unique. The temple’s famous frieze, now in the British Museum, depicted battles between Greeks and Amazons. Its name, “Epicurius,” means “the Helper” — a title honoring Apollo’s protection during times of plague.
