In Saigon, Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức set himself on fire to protest the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government.

Malcolm Browne’s photograph of the act shocked the world and brought international attention to the crisis. The image is both disturbing and deeply moving, a reminder of the extremes people may go to for justice and belief.
