Jericho is frequently described as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Archaeological evidence places human settlement in the area at around 9000 BC, making its history stretch back roughly 11,000 years.
Located near the Jordan River, Jericho benefited from access to water and fertile land, helping early communities establish themselves in the region. Archaeologists have uncovered remains of ancient walls, dwellings and other structures that demonstrate how sophisticated some of its earliest inhabitants were.
