7Susa, Iran – Around 7000 BC
Susa was one of the most important ancient settlements in southwestern Iran. Archaeological evidence indicates that habitation in the area goes back approximately 7,000 years.
The settlement eventually developed into a major political and cultural center associated with the ancient Elamite civilization. Later, Susa became important under Persian rulers and played a significant role in the history of the Achaemenid Empire.
Today, archaeological remains provide evidence of the extraordinary civilizations that once flourished here, making Susa one of the world’s most fascinating ancient urban sites.
