Aleppo has one of the deepest historical layers in the Middle East. Archaeological evidence indicates habitation at the site going back thousands of years, with estimates commonly placing its origins around the 5th millennium BC.
Its location made it an important crossroads between Anatolia, Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean. Merchants, armies and travelers passed through the region for centuries.
The famous Citadel of Aleppo dominates the historic cityscape and represents just one chapter in a history extending back far beyond the medieval period.
