2Argos, Greece – Around 5000 BC
Argos, in the Peloponnese, is another Greek city with an exceptionally ancient history. Archaeological evidence places habitation in the area deep in prehistory, with some modern compilations dating its earliest settlement to around 5000 BC.
The city became a significant center during ancient Greek history and was an important rival of Sparta and other Greek city-states.
Among its historical attractions are the remains of the ancient theatre, agora and sanctuary of Hera. Unlike Athens, Argos is less internationally famous, making its ancient heritage particularly interesting for travelers looking beyond Greece’s most visited destinations.
