6Athens Had a Lottery System for Politicians

In an effort to reduce corruption and ensure equal opportunity, Ancient Athens used a lottery system to select citizens for public office.

Known as “sortition,” this system was seen as a way to maintain fairness in a democratic society, allowing ordinary citizens, rather than just the wealthy elite, to participate in governance.
