Slavery was a significant part of Ancient Greek society, but its structure varied widely between city-states. In Athens, slaves often worked as household servants, miners, or craftsmen.

Some slaves, known as “helots,” in Sparta were state-owned and were essential to the agricultural economy. Interestingly, some slaves could earn their freedom, and a few even managed to achieve positions of influence.
