Even if you’re not planning to captain the boat yourself, it helps to learn a few nautical basics. Knowing the difference between port and starboard, or how to assist during mooring, will make your journey smoother—and more engaging.  

Understanding basic knot-tying, anchoring techniques, and how to read the wind or help with sails adds to the adventure. Most skippers are happy to teach beginners, and gaining some hands-on knowledge will enhance your appreciation of the sailing lifestyle as you navigate from island to island.
