3Understand the Wind—Especially the Meltemi

The Aegean’s most defining weather feature is the Meltemi wind, a dry northern wind that peaks during July and August. It can reach Force 6 or higher and may cause itinerary changes, especially in the more exposed Cyclades. While it can make for exhilarating sailing, it’s not ideal for beginners navigating alone.

Always check the daily wind forecast using apps like Windy or Poseidon, and trust your skipper’s judgment when adjusting routes. Sticking to more protected routes like the Saronic Gulf, Dodecanese, or Sporades during Meltemi season is a wise choice for those new to sailing.
