3Achilleion Palace

Perched on a hillside south of Corfu Town, the Achilleion Palace is a striking blend of mythology, art, and imperial ambition. Built in the late 19th century for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, the palace reflects her fascination with ancient Greek culture and tragic heroes—especially Achilles.

Statues, frescoes, and sculptures inspired by Greek mythology fill the palace grounds, while manicured gardens offer dramatic views toward the sea. Later used by European royalty and political figures, the Achilleion carries an air of melancholy elegance. Visiting the palace offers insight not only into Corfu’s aristocratic past, but also into how classical Greek ideals continued to inspire Europe long after antiquity.
