5Portara
Standing alone on a small islet just off the port of Naxos, the Portara is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Cyclades. This massive marble doorway is all that remains of an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo, built in the 6th century BCE.
Despite its simplicity, the structure has a powerful presence. Its scale, symmetry, and position overlooking the sea create a dramatic visual impact, especially at sunset when the stone glows in golden light.
The Portara symbolizes the connection between mythology, architecture, and nature. It’s both a historical monument and a cultural emblem of Naxos, representing the island’s importance in ancient times.
