Often overshadowed by more distant islands, Kea (also known as Tzia) is one of the easiest quiet escapes from Athens—just an hour by ferry from Lavrio port. Despite its proximity, Kea remains wonderfully underrated.
The island combines Cycladic charm with a twist of mainland Greece. Its main village, Ioulida, features stone-paved alleys and a relaxed vibe. The hiking trails are excellent, leading to ancient ruins, hidden chapels, and oak forests. Kea’s beaches, like Koundouros and Spathi, are uncrowded even in summer. It’s a perfect weekend or short break destination.
