8Burano Island, Venice Lagoon (Italy)

Some places look like they were painted rather than built — and Burano is one of them. Every home on this tiny Venetian island is painted in a bold, bright hue: lemon yellows, emerald greens, hot pinks, cobalt blues.

The canals that wind between them reflect a kaleidoscope of color that appears almost too perfect to be natural.
Local legend says fishermen painted their homes in loud shades to find them easily on foggy mornings. Today, the effect is pure fantasy.
