6Alonissos – A Protected Natural Haven

Also part of the Sporades, Alonissos is not only one of Greece’s greenest islands but also a key part of the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, the largest marine protected area in Europe. Covered in thick pine forests, Alonissos is an eco-tourist’s dream, with numerous hiking trails and an emphasis on sustainability.

The island is home to rare flora and fauna, including the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. The National Marine Park plays a crucial role in protecting the island’s marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Chrisi Milia is a beach surrounded by lush pine groves, and the Old Village of Alonissos is perched on a hill amidst olive trees and cypresses.
