3Mdina, Malta

Known as the Silent City, Mdina has an atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else in Europe.

The ancient walled city is filled with narrow stone streets, ornate doorways, quiet courtyards and honey-colored buildings. Its elevated position also provides sweeping views across much of Malta.

Walking through Mdina after the day-trippers leave can feel particularly magical. The narrow lanes become quiet, the old stone buildings glow in the evening light and the city seems almost frozen in time.
