8Naxos, Greece
Naxos combines many of the things travelers love about the Greek islands without relying entirely on the glamorous image associated with Santorini or Mykonos.
Chora, the island’s main town, has a maze of narrow lanes, Venetian architecture and whitewashed houses leading toward the famous Portara. Beyond the capital, mountain villages such as Apeiranthos and Halki offer a very different side of island life.
Naxos also has long sandy beaches, excellent local food and a strong agricultural tradition. Its combination of scenery, culture and relatively relaxed atmosphere makes it an island to watch as more travelers look beyond Greece’s most famous names.
