4Sibiu, Romania

Sibiu is one of Romania’s most atmospheric cities and one of those places that can make travelers wonder why they hadn’t heard more about it sooner.

Located in the historic region of Transylvania, the city combines colorful Baroque buildings, medieval walls, cobbled streets and impressive squares. Its historic center is particularly atmospheric, with architectural details that reflect centuries of Saxon influence.

Look closely at the rooftops and you may notice Sibiu’s famous “eyes” — small window-like openings that give some buildings the appearance of watching visitors.

With its compact center, cafés and surrounding Transylvanian countryside, Sibiu is an appealing alternative to Europe’s better-known medieval cities.
