Crete is dotted with thousands of caves, many of which hold historical and mythological importance. One of the most famous is the Dikteon Cave in Lasithi, which, according to Greek mythology, is the birthplace of Zeus, the king of the gods.

Another well-known cave, the Ideon Cave on Mount Ida, is believed to be where Zeus was raised by a nymph to avoid being eaten by his father, Cronus.
