7Delphi: The Oracle’s Ancient Sanctuary

One of the most popular day trips from Athens is a visit to the archaeological site of Delphi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located about 180 km (112 miles) northwest of Athens, Delphi was once considered the center of the world in ancient Greek mythology. It was home to the Oracle of Apollo, where pilgrims sought guidance from the priestess Pythia.

Highlights: The Temple of Apollo, where the oracle gave her prophecies, stands as the centerpiece of the site. The ancient theater offers stunning views of Mount Parnassus, while the Delphi Archaeological Museum houses the famous Charioteer of Delphi statue. The Tholos of Athena Pronaia, a picturesque circular ruin, is another must-see landmark. Getting there: You can reach Delphi by car (about 2.5 hours), bus, or with an organized tour from Athens.
