8Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn’s Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval urban centers in Northern Europe.
Its combination of defensive towers, colorful façades, cobbled streets and Gothic architecture gives it an unmistakable historic character. The Upper Town provides beautiful views across the rooftops, while the Lower Town is filled with merchant houses, churches and winding lanes.
Despite its medieval appearance, Tallinn’s historic center is far from being a museum. Restaurants, cafés, shops and local life occupy many of the old buildings.
The result is a city where centuries-old architecture remains part of everyday life.
