6Visby, Sweden
On the Swedish island of Gotland, Visby is an extraordinary medieval town surrounded by an almost completely preserved city wall.
The wall stretches for more than three kilometers and includes numerous towers and gates. Inside, visitors can discover cobbled streets, medieval churches, colorful houses and atmospheric ruins.
Visby’s history is closely linked to its role as an important trading center in the medieval Baltic world. Every summer, the town also hosts Medieval Week, when the streets come alive with historical costumes, markets and performances.
