9Balos Lagoon, Crete, Greece

Balos Lagoon is another Cretan beach that looks almost too beautiful to be real. Situated on the Gramvousa Peninsula, it features a spectacular combination of white sand, turquoise water and rugged mountains.

The lagoon’s shallow water creates different shades of blue and green, while the surrounding landscape gives the beach an almost deserted-island atmosphere.

Getting there is part of the adventure, whether you arrive by boat or make the journey overland. Once you see the lagoon from above, however, the effort suddenly seems worthwhile.

Caribbean factor: Brilliant turquoise water surrounding a sandy lagoon.
