4Tallinn Old Town, Estonia

The medieval heart of Tallinn is one of the best-preserved historic centers in Northern Europe. The Estonian capital’s Old Town combines Gothic architecture, medieval merchant houses, defensive towers and winding cobbled streets.

Town Hall Square is the natural centerpiece, surrounded by colorful historic buildings and narrow lanes leading toward viewpoints over the red rooftops. Parts of the original city walls and towers are still standing, adding to the atmosphere.

Tallinn is particularly appealing because its medieval heritage is combined with a lively modern city just beyond the historic center.
