3Český Krumlov, Czech Republic

Wrapped around a bend in the Vltava River, Český Krumlov looks almost too picturesque to be real. Its historic center is a maze of narrow lanes, colorful Renaissance and medieval buildings and small squares.

The enormous castle complex rises above the town, while the river curves around the historic center below. From higher viewpoints, the combination of red rooftops, church towers and the winding river creates one of the most recognizable panoramas in the Czech Republic.

Although popular with visitors, Český Krumlov retains a wonderfully intimate atmosphere, especially early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
