Makri is a privately owned island in Greece’s Ionian Sea and was announced for auction with a starting price of €247,000.
The island covers approximately 0.98 square kilometres — around 243 acres — and has more than seven kilometres of coastline. It is part of the Echinades island group, roughly 30 kilometres east of Kefalonia.
But there is a major catch.
Makri is undeveloped and environmentally sensitive. Existing structures include a small house, water cistern and chapel, while major infrastructure development is restricted. The €247,000 figure is therefore a starting auction price, not the cost of creating a luxury island retreat.
Still, the idea of bidding on a Greek island for less than €250,000 is difficult to ignore.
